Don't Let These Songs Ruin Your Big Day: A Masterclass on the "Do Not Play" List
Every DFW couple wants their wedding to be remembered for the right reasons—the love, the laughter, and the legendary dance floor. But nothing stops a party faster than a song that misses the mark. That is where the "Do Not Play" List comes in.
I’m DJ Tommy Scott, and I’ve spent my career helping couples navigate the delicate balance between personal taste and crowd-pleasing vibes. Here is how to master the art of the veto.
Protecting Your Vibe
Think of your "Do Not Play" list as a security guard for your party. Its job isn't to be a "fun killer," but to protect the atmosphere you've worked so hard to create.
The Emotional Factor: Music is a time machine. If a song reminds you of a bad breakup or a person you’d rather not think about, it doesn't belong at your wedding.
The "Cringe" Factor: We all have those songs that just drive us crazy. If the thought of the "Macarena" makes your skin crawl, put it on the list!
The Pro's Advice: How to Veto Like a Legend
To ensure your list helps rather than hurts the party, follow these three simple rules:
1. Less is More The best lists are short and sweet. Aim for about 10-15 songs. This gives you plenty of room to cut the absolute dealbreakers without making your DJ feel like their hands are tied.
2. Focus on the Tracks, Not the Genre Banning an entire genre like "Hip-Hop" or "Country" is a common mistake. You might hate a specific artist, but there might be another track in that genre that would get your best friends on the floor. Be specific about the songs you hate, and leave the style open for your DJ to mix.
3. The Trust Factor You hired a pro for a reason! I’ve seen every kind of crowd imaginable, and I know how to pivot when a vibe isn't working. Use your list as a guide for your style, and then trust me to take it from there.
Your Vision, My Mix
At the end of the day, my goal is to make sure your wedding is the best party you’ve ever been to. A smart "Do Not Play" list ensures we’re moving in the same direction.
